Hello, I am Daniel Turner

Consultant

Dan brings a wealth of educational experience to College-Bound Consulting, including twenty years of teaching at the college and university levels, as well as twelve years of collegiate academic advising. He earned his Doctorate in English from Vanderbilt University, his Masters Degree in English from the University of South Carolina (USC), and his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hampden-Sydney College (HSC) in English and French. Dan was a dual-sport letterman in high school and co-captain of his soccer team who was recruited to play in college. At HSC, he earned a four-year merit scholarship, was named to Phi Beta Kappa, fulfilled Honors coursework and a thesis, and graduated Valedictorian. He also completed undergraduate sessions at the University of Oxford in England and in Normandy, France. Dan was James A. Morris Fellow for his M.A. at USC and Harold S. Vanderbilt Scholar in earning his Ph.D. at Vanderbilt. Over the past twelve years, Dan has distinguished himself as an exemplary faculty member in teaching, scholarship, and service as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English at Siena College and as a tenured Associate Professor of English at Coastal Carolina University (CCU). Dan has held teaching positions in diverse learning environments: a large state flagship university (USC); a top-tier private institution (Vanderbilt); a Catholic liberal arts college in the Northeast (Siena); a regional comprehensive university (CCU). Dan’s commitment to excellence in student learning has been recognized by the universities for which he has taught. At Vanderbilt, essays by his students routinely placed for the Morgan Award, given for the best piece of writing by a first-year student, and he won the Thomas Daniel Young Award for Excellence in Teaching. At CCU, students have published research articles developed in collaboration with him, and the Student Government Association honored Dan with the 2014 “Apple” Award for Outstanding Teacher in Humanities/Fine Arts.

Across his academic career, he has earned numerous grants and fellowships, worth well over $100,000. He has published three books and dozens of essays—academic as well as creative—on contemporary literature, film, and other media. A highly skilled professional writer, Dan has spent much of the past two decades helping students express themselves clearly and effectively. Creating connections—with students, with the community, with professional peers far and wide—has been at the heart of his life’s work. Dan keeps active in local and statewide service. Dan serves on the Board of Governors for the South Carolina Academy of Authors, where he oversees SCAA’s annual creative writing competitions. He is also a member of Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church, serves as Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 360, coaches CoastFA soccer, and trains with the Grand Strand Running Club. Dan was honored as Distinguished Alumnus for HSC in 2016.
