Another good rule of thumb: the range for a good SAT score at many competitive schools tends to sit between 1200 – 1400. And the range is typically 1400 – 1600 at the most competitive schools.
You're an eligible candidate for an okay number of schools, falling just short of that national average score. Among others, you can include the California State University-Fresno, Manchester University, and Lynn University in your Target institutions.
For top-30 and especially top-20 schools (especially Ivies and Stanford, MIT, and Caltech), however, a 1400 is not as competitive. If your goal is to get into one of these top schools, we recommend you retake the SAT and try to score at least 1500.
Neither the SAT nor the ACT is objectively easier; the better test depends on your strengths. The ACT is often considered better for those who are strong at science reasoning and can work quickly, as it has a required science section and less time per question. The SAT is generally seen as better for those who prefer a less rushed pace and puzzle-style questions, as it offers more time per question and doesn't have a science section. Taking practice tests for both is the best way to determine which is a better fit for you.
Getting a 1200 on the SAT is not considered extremely difficult, as it falls in the above-average range, but it does require consistent preparation for most people. Whether it is "hard" depends on your starting point and how much you study, but it is an achievable score for many with focused effort on fundamentals and practice. A score of 1200 is above the national average and is a strong score for admission to many universities, but it may not be sufficient for highly selective colleges.
A good SAT score is typically one that places you in the 75th percentile or higher for your target university, which for top schools often means around 1550. While anything above the national average of 1050 is technically “good,” competitive applicants generally need scores closer to 1470–1580.
An SAT score in the range of 1530-1600 is considered in the top 1% of test-takers. This means you have performed as well as or better than 99% of other students on the exam. While the 1600 is a perfect score, any score in this range is exceptional.
A “good” SAT score for Ivy League schools often falls between 1500 and 1600. While each institution has its unique benchmarks, most successful applicants will have scores that place them in the top 1% to 2% of test-takers nationwide.
The average SAT score is around 1050, so if your score is higher than that, it's above average. A score of 1350 or higher is in the top 10% of SAT test takers. Even if your score is lower than you'd like it to be, there are many amazing colleges and universities around the world looking for students like you.
A perfect SAT score in 2025 is 1600, which is achieved by scoring an 800 in the Evidence-based Reading and Writing section and an 800 in the Math section. This score is rare and represents the highest possible total score on the test.
