Most families have never worked with an educational consultant. The concept sounds vaguely expensive and possibly unnecessary — like hiring a personal shopper when you could just go to the store yourself.

Here is the reality: the college admissions process in 2026 is more complex, more competitive, and more expensive than it has ever been. An educational consultant is not someone who does the work for your student. We are the people who make sure your family does not waste time, money, or opportunities by navigating it alone.

Why Summer Matters More Than You Think

The academic year is packed. Between AP classes, sports, clubs, and social life, there is almost no time to explore new interests or develop skills outside the classroom. Summer gives your student 10 to 12 unstructured weeks. What they do with that time makes a measurable difference.

Admissions officers at selective schools are not just looking at GPA and test scores. They want to see what students do when no one is telling them what to do. Summer is where that story gets written.

What We Actually Do

At College Planning Centers, our work with families covers five areas. All of them connect to a single goal: getting your student into the right school at the right price.

1. Academic Planning

We look at your student’s transcript, course selection, GPA trajectory, and test scores. Then we build a plan.

For a 9th grader, that means mapping out which courses to take each year to maximize both GPA and rigor. For a junior, it means identifying whether their profile matches the schools they are targeting — and adjusting if it does not.

We also advise on SAT vs. ACT selection, test prep timing, and how to balance academic demands with everything else your student is doing.

2. College Research and List Building

This is where most families struggle on their own. There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the United States. The average family considers maybe 10 to 15 of them — usually the ones they have heard of or that show up on a Google search.

We use admissions data, program quality assessments, financial aid histories, and your family’s specific criteria to build a list of 8 to 11 schools where your student is likely to be admitted, where they can afford to attend, and where they will actually want to spend four years.

Every school on the list has to pass the fit test. We wrote about how we think about college fit versus prestige  — it is the foundation of our approach.

3. Financial Strategy

College is one of the largest purchases a family will ever make. Most families approach it with less research than they put into buying a car.

We help families understand the difference between sticker price and net cost, identify schools likely to offer merit scholarships based on your student’s profile, navigate the FAFSA and CSS Profile, and compare financial aid offers when they arrive.

For South Carolina families, we also help students position themselves for state merit scholarships — Palmetto Fellows (up to $7,500/year), LIFE ($5,000/year), and HOPE — starting as early as 9th grade

4. Application Support

The Common App, Coalition App, and school-specific supplements require strategy. Which activities to highlight, how to frame the essay, who to ask for recommendations, and how to present your student’s story in a way that is authentic and compelling.

We do not write essays for students. We guide them through the process — brainstorming topics, reviewing drafts, and making sure the final product sounds like them, not like a consultant.

5. Decision Support

When the acceptance letters and financial aid offers arrive, we help families compare. This is not just about which school offered the most money. It is about which school offers the best combination of fit, cost, and outcomes for your specific student.

Who Hires an Educational Consultant?

We work with families across a wide range:

  • Families with high-achieving students who want to maximize their options at selective schools.
  • Families with average students who want to find the best fit and the most financial aid.
  • First-generation college families who do not have personal experience navigating the process.
  • Families with students who have learning differences and need to find schools with strong support services.
  • Families who are stressed. Honestly, this is a big one. The college process creates anxiety, and having a professional guide reduces that anxiety for both parents and students.

Is It Worth the Investment?

Here is how we think about it. Our college planning consultants have helped families across Horry, Georgetown, and Charleston counties secure over $9 million in scholarships and grants. We have a 97 percent rate of students gaining college admissions to their top-choice institution.

The cost of our services is a fraction of what a single semester of college costs. When the alternative is choosing the wrong school, missing scholarship deadlines, or graduating with unnecessary debt, the investment makes sense.

But we also understand that not every family needs or can afford a full consulting engagement. That is why we offer a free 30-minute initial consultation. No commitment, no sales pitch — just an honest conversation about where your student stands and whether we can help.

Educational Consultant FAQs: College Planning, Admissions, Financial Aid, and Scholarships

An educational consultant helps students and families navigate the college admissions process with a clear strategy. This can include academic planning, college research, college list building, financial aid guidance, application support, and decision-making. At College Planning Centers, our consultants help families make informed choices so students can find the right college fit at the right price.

Yes. Families can hire an educational consultant or college admissions consultant to help with the college list, essays, deadlines, application strategy, and college financial aid planning. A trusted resource like College Planning Center can guide students through the full college application process, from identifying the right schools and evaluating college fit to strengthening applications and staying on track with key deadlines. While school counselors and free advising resources can also provide support, many families choose expert guidance to make the process less stressful and more strategic.

For many families, yes. A educational consultant or college planning consultant can provide personalized support with school selection, essays, deadlines, and college financial aid, helping students stay organized and reduce stress throughout the college admissions process. While school counselors remain an important resource, some families want more one-on-one guidance. That is where College Planning Center can add value by offering tailored support, clear strategy, and expert guidance to help students make confident decisions at every stage of college planning.

The earlier, the better. Some families start in 9th or 10th grade so they can build a strong academic and extracurricular plan, while others begin in junior or senior year for college admissions and application support. College Planning Centers helps students at every stage, whether they need long-term planning or last-minute guidance.

No reputable educational consultant should write a student’s essay for them. Instead, the role of a college admissions consultant is to guide brainstorming, review drafts, and help students strengthen their message while keeping the essay authentic. At College Planning Centers, we support students through the essay process without taking over their voice.

An educational consultant can help families understand financial aid, compare college costs, complete the FAFSA and CSS Profile, and identify strong scholarship opportunities. At College Planning Centers, we help families look beyond sticker price so they can better evaluate net cost, merit aid, and long-term affordability.

Absolutely. Educational consultants are not only for high-achieving students applying to selective colleges. They also help average students find the right college fit, build a realistic college list, and pursue strong financial aid and scholarship opportunities. College Planning Centers works with students across a wide range of academic backgrounds and goals.

A good educational consultant helps students create a balanced college list based on academics, budget, program quality, admissions likelihood, and personal fit. At College Planning Centers, we help families choose schools that make sense both academically and financially, rather than relying only on name recognition or rankings.

A school counselor supports many students and often has limited time for one-on-one college planning. An educational consultant provides more personalized attention and deeper strategy for college admissions, applications, financial aid, and college fit. College Planning Centers offers that added level of expert guidance for families who want more customized support.

College Planning Centers works with families through academic planning, college admissions strategy, financial aid guidance, scholarship planning, application support, and final college decision-making. Our goal is to help students get into the right school at the right price with less stress and more confidence.

At first, I was a bit hesitant about the cost of working with Chris, the college planner for my son. However, it absolutely paid off in the end. My son was accepted into every college he applied to, and the guidance and support throughout the process were invaluable.

I cannot recommend Christopher Parsons highly enough for his work with students navigating the college application process. Christopher began working with my son, Harrison, at the start of his senior year — which was a relatively late start for college planning — yet he immediately brought structure, clarity, and momentum to the process.
