Paying for college is one of the biggest concerns I hear from families across South Carolina. The good news is that billions of dollars in scholarship money are available every year, and a significant amount of it goes unclaimed simply because students do not apply. The Palmetto State offers a particularly strong set of state-funded scholarship programs, and when you layer in local, regional, and national opportunities, the potential to reduce college costs dramatically is very real.

I am Christopher Parsons, founder of College Planning Centers of America, and I have spent over 20 years helping families in the Myrtle Beach area and throughout South Carolina navigate the financial side of college planning. Here is a comprehensive guide to the top scholarships SC students should be targeting in 2026.

South Carolina State Scholarships

Palmetto Fellows Scholarship

The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship is South Carolina’s premier merit-based award. It provides up to $6,700 per year for freshmen and up to $7,500 for upperclassmen at eligible SC four-year institutions. To qualify, students generally need a 1200 SAT or 27 ACT score, a 3.5 GPA, and must rank in the top six percent of their class (or meet alternative criteria).

This is a renewable scholarship, meaning students who maintain the academic requirements can receive funding for up to eight semesters. For high-achieving students at schools across the Grand Strand and beyond, Palmetto Fellows should be the first target.

LIFE Scholarship

The Legislative Incentives for Future Excellence (LIFE) Scholarship provides up to $5,000 per year at four-year institutions. Students must meet two of three criteria: a 1100 SAT or 24 ACT, a 3.0 GPA, or rank in the top 30 percent of their graduating class.

LIFE is more accessible than Palmetto Fellows and covers a significant portion of tuition at many SC public universities. It is also available for students attending eligible two-year institutions at a reduced amount.

SC HOPE Scholarship

The HOPE Scholarship is a one-year, $2,800 award for first-time freshmen at eligible four-year institutions who have a 3.0 GPA but do not meet LIFE or Palmetto Fellows requirements. It provides a bridge year during which students can earn eligibility for LIFE by maintaining the required GPA.

Lottery Tuition Assistance

For students attending South Carolina technical colleges, Lottery Tuition Assistance helps cover tuition costs. This is an important option for students pursuing associate degrees or technical certifications before transferring to a four-year school.

Local and Regional Scholarships

Local scholarships are often the most overlooked and the least competitive. Here are several that students in the Myrtle Beach and Horry County area should research:

Horry County Community Foundation Scholarships

The Community Foundation of Horry County administers multiple scholarship funds with varying criteria. Some target specific high schools, while others focus on particular fields of study or community involvement.

Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarships

The local Chamber offers scholarship programs for graduating seniors who have demonstrated leadership and community engagement in the Grand Strand area.

Coastal Carolina University Institutional Scholarships

CCU offers a range of merit-based and need-based scholarships for incoming freshmen. As a local institution, Coastal Carolina is particularly generous with awards for Horry County residents.

School-Specific Scholarships

Every high school in the area, from Myrtle Beach High to St. James to Carolina Forest, distributes local scholarship opportunities through their guidance offices. These awards are often smaller individually but can add up significantly and typically have fewer applicants.

National Scholarships Worth Pursuing

National Merit Scholarship Program

Students who score exceptionally well on the PSAT/NMSQT may qualify as National Merit Semifinalists, opening the door to significant scholarship offers from participating colleges. Preparation for the PSAT should begin in sophomore year.

Coca-Cola Scholars Program

This highly competitive national scholarship awards $20,000 to 150 students annually based on leadership and community service. South Carolina students have a strong track record of recognition.

Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship

The Elks award up to $50,000 over four years. Applications are judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. Local Elks lodges in the Myrtle Beach area can provide application information.

QuestBridge National College Match

For high-achieving, low-income students, QuestBridge matches scholars with full four-year scholarships at top partner colleges. This is a transformational program that more SC families should know about.

Scholarships.com and Fastweb

These free search engines aggregate thousands of national scholarships. Setting up a profile and applying to matched opportunities should be part of every student’s routine starting in junior year.

Tips for Winning More Scholarships

Apply Early and Apply Often

Treat scholarship applications like a part-time job. Set aside dedicated time each week to search for and complete applications. The more you apply to, the better your odds.

Customize Every Application

Generic essays get generic results. Tailor your responses to each scholarship’s specific criteria and values. Reference your South Carolina roots, your community involvement, and your specific goals.

Do Not Ignore Small Awards

A $500 scholarship might not seem significant, but ten of them add up to $5,000. Local awards often have fewer applicants, which means better odds.

Keep Track of Deadlines

Create a spreadsheet or use a planning tool to track every scholarship, its deadline, its requirements, and its status. Missing a deadline means missing money.

Get Strong Letters of Recommendation

Ask teachers and mentors who know you well and can speak specifically to your strengths. Give them plenty of notice and provide them with a summary of your accomplishments and goals.

Build a Scholarship Strategy

Scholarship hunting is most effective when it is part of a broader college financial plan. At College Planning Centers of America, we help families across South Carolina develop comprehensive strategies that combine scholarships, financial aid, and smart school selection to minimize out-of-pocket costs.

Every dollar in scholarships is a dollar you do not have to borrow. Start early, stay organized, and apply relentlessly.

College Planning Centers helps students align academics and testing strategy with scholarship eligibility goals.

At College Planning Centers, we encourage families to prioritize local scholarships because they often have fewer applicants and better odds.

That includes building a list of state scholarships, national scholarships, and local scholarships, while keeping track of deadlines and requirements. College Planning Centers encourages students to begin early so they can compete for the widest range of awards.

Some of the best national scholarships mentioned in this guide include the National Merit Scholarship Program, Coca-Cola Scholars Program, Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship, and QuestBridge National College Match. One of the biggest mistakes with scholarship applications is waiting too long and treating scholarships as optional instead of essential. Other common mistakes include missing deadlines, submitting generic essays, and ignoring local scholarships. At College Planning Centers, we help students stay organized, customize applications, and apply more consistently to improve results.

At first, I was a bit hesitant about the cost of working with Chris, the college planner for my son. However, it absolutely paid off in the end. My son was accepted into every college he applied to, and the guidance and support throughout the process were invaluable.

I cannot recommend Christopher Parsons highly enough for his work with students navigating the college application process. Christopher began working with my son, Harrison, at the start of his senior year — which was a relatively late start for college planning — yet he immediately brought structure, clarity, and momentum to the process.
