“Thanks to the guidance from Chris and the SAT prep with Miles and George, I raised my score from around 1000 to 1230 and got accepted to all five schools I applied to: Ole Miss, Clemson, Citadel, Texas A&M, and Virginia Tech. They helped me build a strong college application. So, a huge shout out to them, especially Mr. Chris Parsons. ”

FAQ

Have questions about planning for college?
You’re not alone.

From SAT exam practice tests to ACT test preparation and diagnostic assessments, families often wonder how to choose the right path for boosting scores. Our FAQ section addresses the most common concerns we hear from students and parents, offering clear, expert guidance on topics like standardized testing strategies, elite SAT prep, and test preparation courses—helping your student feel confident and fully prepared for test day.

Take Practice Tests the Right Way.
When it comes to studying for the ACT and SAT, there is one technique that everyone agrees on: take several practice tests before taking the real test. Take a practice test to determine your baseline and what you need to study. Take practice tests routinely.

An ACT prep course can cost anywhere from less than \(\$100\) for self-paced online materials to over \(\$3,000\) for personalized one-on-one tutoring. Most live online courses cost between \(\$400\) and \(\$900\), while in-person options are generally more expensive, typically ranging from \(\$800\) to over \(\$2,000\). The final price depends on the format (online vs. in-person), level of support (self-paced vs. live instruction vs. tutoring), and the specific company or provider.

On average, families should expect to spend anywhere from $50 to $200 per hour for one-on-one tutoring. Group classes offer general guidance at a lower cost per student, averaging $30 to $100 per hour. Many private ACT and SAT tutoring companies offer packages to best suit your test prep needs.

However, a general rule of thumb is to start preparing for the test at least 3-6 months in advance. If you're planning to take the SAT in the spring of your junior year, it's a good idea to start studying during the summer before your junior year if possible.

ACT score of 24+ = top 25% ACT score of 29+ = top 10% ACT of 31+ = top 5% ACT score of 35+ = top 1% of test-takers.

No, a score of 27 is not bad; it is a strong score that is well above the national average. A 27 is in the 87th percentile and makes you a competitive applicant at many selective colleges, including some state flagships and strong private universities. However, for the most highly selective universities, it may be considered below their typical admitted student range.

Neither the ACT nor the SAT is objectively easier; the "easier" test depends on your individual strengths and weaknesses. The ACT is faster-paced with a dedicated science section, while the SAT provides more time per question and includes some formulas on the math section, but it is a digitally adaptive test with a higher emphasis on analytical skills. To determine which is easier for you, it is best to take practice tests for both exams.

Harvard does not prefer the SAT over the ACT; they are equally accepted and there is no difference in how they are reviewed by the admissions committee. Both tests are considered as just one factor among many in the application, and the university does not have set score requirements for either test. Applicants should choose the test they feel they will perform best on.

The ACT math test covers topics typically taught in high school through the end of 11th grade, including pre-algebra, elementary and intermediate algebra, coordinate and plane geometry, and trigonometry. The test does not include calculus but may include basic operations with matrices and vectors, and topics can be found in the following categories: Number & Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics & Probability.

You can take the ACT up to 12 times, with scores valid for five years. Many students take the test 2-3 times to achieve their best score, utilizing the superscoring option which combines the highest section scores from all of your test dates.
